Sam’s is a Jamaican restaurant in Nassau County, Just as its name implies, Sam’s Caribbean Marketplace is one stop shop for Jamaican food, music, and products in Nassau County, Long Island. Jamaican newspapers like the Gleaner, Jamaican hair care products, and of course Jamaican food are all sold at Sam’s At Sam’s, there is a certain island feel in the air. Reggae music and news blear through the air. There is a small dinning area at the center of Sam’s and its not uncommon to see customers reading the Gleaner or playing dominoes. At Sam’s you can buy different varieties of Jamaican food, although it is primarily a Jamaican restaurant. Products from other islands like Trinidad and Tobago or Haiti are also sold at Sam’s.
Adding on to the relaxed island feeling at Sam’s are the cashiers. They are all friendly and engaging. As Sam’s has been in operation for years, the cashiers have gotten to know the local clientele. My grandmother was among the first people to be there when Sam’s opened its doors, decades ago. Many years ago, when I went to Sam’s with my father, a cashier told me that ” I look like my daddy like he gone to bed!” A patois phrase that means you really resemble someone else. Sam’s signature is dish are Jamaican patties. Most often patties are filled with meat, my personal favorite . But Sam”s offers multiple types of fillings, including chicken, vegetables, and my mother favorite, a patty filled with the crust of another patty. As of this posting, Sam’s is in the process of moving towards accepting orders on Uber Eats.
